Excess Flow Valve

An excess flow valve is a device designed to automatically restrict or eliminate the flow of natural gas in the event of a gas service line major leak or a broken line. The excess flow valve will stop the flow of gas thus preventing any injury or property damage that could be caused by the natural gas leak. The device will not detect a slow leak downstream of the service tap or device itself.

Upon a customer’s request, Richmond Utilities (RU) will install an excess flow valve which meets federal government standards for residential and commercial service lines that operate at 10 psig or more and usage load does not exceed 1,000 cubic feet per hour, cost will be assumed by the customer, actual cost "to be determined".
